An Artist’s Prayer by Julia Cameron
O Great Creator,
We are gathered together in your name
That we may be of greater service to you
And to our fellows.
We offer ourselves to you as instruments.
We open ourselves to your creativity in our lives.
We surrender to you our old ideas.
We trust that it is safe to follow you.
We know you created us and that creativity
Is your nature and our own.
We ask you to unfold our lives
According to your plan, not our low self-worth.
Help us to believe that it is not too late
And that we are not too small or too flawed
To be healed ---
By you and through each other - and made whole.
Help us to love one another,
To nurture each other’s unfolding,
To encourage each other’s growth,
And understand each other’s fears.
Help us to know that we are not alone,
That we are loved and lovable.
Help us to create as an act of worship to you.
You’re Never Too Good For Community
We’re told to be self-sufficient, to handle things on our own, to not rely on anyone. But that’s a lie. You’re never too “good” or “strong” or “independent” to need community.
Creativity thrives in community.
Having people who truly get it—who can sit with you in your highs and lows, who remind you that you’re not in this alone—isn’t a luxury. It’s essential. Whether it’s a book club, a small group, or just a few people you trust, it can make all the difference.
I’ve learned to treat my creativity with the kind of respect it deserves—not as a hobby I squeeze into the margins, but as a core part of who I am.
I respect my creativity.
I spend time with it.
I cancel plans because of it.
And sometimes it means leaning on others when I feel like I’ve got nothing left to give.
I started the Artist’s Way last year at rock bottom. I looked back at the pages I wrote in chapter 5 and realized, the life I was longing for is here now. And back then, all it was waiting for was for me to pick it up. But I had to let go of the old.
If you’re feeling stuck, I highly recommend reading this book and doing the exercises with a friend. Is it possible for you find others who feel same? Or who are two steps ahead? You don’t have to do it all alone.
You weren’t made to.
Sometimes, the most creative thing you can do is ask for help.
